A second, fresh look at East Harlem through rare photographs: views from tenement rooftops, family gatherings, sports and neighborhood events from a bygone era. Part of East Harlem was once the largest Little Italy in the country, and the neighborhood has always been home to many cultures and languages.
The book also covers the landmarks that have been preserved and how building changed East Harlem, from tenements to public housing, and celebrates the well-known people who have called the neighborhood home.
Our family is in this book, in East Harlem photos going back to the 1940s. So is our garden center under its old name, Dimitri's Garden Center, from 1970 to 2006.
