A photo history of East Harlem, the neighborhood between Harlem and the Upper East Side that often gets overlooked. Since the early 1800s, newcomers from all over have made their homes here: African American, Irish, German, Jewish, Italian, Scandinavian, Puerto Rican and Latino families, each bringing their own faith, customs and food.
This was the first book to tell East Harlem's story in pictures. Inside are the neighborhood's old iron, stone and rubber factories, its tenements, the 100th Street community, Fiorello La Guardia, the Second and Third Avenue elevated trains, St. Cecilia's and much more.
Our family is in this book, in East Harlem photos going back to the 1940s. So is our garden center under its old name, Dimitri's Garden Center, from 1970 to 2006.
