Common boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) is the classic evergreen hedge. Its small, glossy leaves stay green all year and take well to clipping. Use it for a low hedge along a front yard or stoop, in a pair of planters by a door, or as a clipped ball on a terrace.
Sizes: 24–30 in, and 4–5 ft.
Light: full sun to partial shade. Water: moderate. Water deeply in its first season and during dry spells. Boxwood in planters dries out faster, especially on a windy terrace, so check the soil often.
Hardiness: rated for USDA zones 5–8; NYC is zone 7b.
Pets: toxic to cats and dogs if eaten (ASPCA).
