Alocasia Polly, scientifically known as Alocasia × amazonica 'Polly', is a compact, rhizomatous evergreen perennial prized for its arrowhead-shaped leaves that feature a striking contrast between deep green foliage and bold silvery-green to white veins. The plant typically reaches a mature height and spread of 1 to 2 feet (30–60 cm), making it suitable for indoor tabletops and shelves. Its leaves are waxy and glossy, often displaying a rich purple underside, and can grow up to 12–18 inches in length, though some sources note they may reach up to 20 inches.
Flowering: While the plant can produce cream or pale green flowers on a spadix surrounded by a spathe (resembling a calla lily), blooming is rare in indoor conditions and usually only occurs on older, well-cared-for plants.
-
Growth Habit: It exhibits an upright, clumping growth pattern and is often described as a polyploid mutant, which contributes to its robust, lush appearance with slightly more rounded and ruffled leaf edges compared to standard varieties.
-
Toxicity: The plant is toxic to humans and pets (cats and dogs) due to the presence of calcium oxalates, which can cause irritation to the skin, mouth, and throat if ingested.
-
Origin: Despite its common name "Amazonica," its exact origins are unknown, and it is believed to be a hybrid with no traceable Amazonian species, likely descending from tropical Southeast Asian ancestors.
