Air plants, scientifically known as Tillandsia, are epiphytic flowering plants in the Bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) that grow without soil. Comprising approximately 650 to 660 species, they are native to forests, mountains, and deserts across the Neotropics, ranging from the southern United States to central Argentina.Unlike traditional plants, they obtain all their water and nutrients from the air, rain, and humidity using specialized trichomes (scale-like structures) on their leaves rather than absorbing them through roots.
Key characteristics and care requirements include:
-
Attachment: Their roots function solely as anchors to attach to surfaces like tree branches, rocks, or driftwood; they do not damage their host as they are not parasitic.
-
Watering: They require bright, indirect light and should be watered once a week by soaking for 20–30 minutes or misting 2–3 times weekly, followed by thorough drying to prevent rot.
-
Lifecycle: Air plants are monocarpic, meaning they flower only once in their lifetime before dying, though they typically produce "pups" (offshoots) to propagate new plants.
-
Varieties: Popular types include ionantha (known for red/pink flowers), Tillandsia xerographica (large, silvery), and Tillandsia cyanea (Pink Quill), with some species classified as mesic (humid, green leaves) or xeric (dry, fuzzy gray leaves).
