Is a Monstera a Philodendron? 

The answer is no. 

We include it within the Philo category because they are so similar. 

While they're both in the same larger Araceae family, a philodendron is more closely related to the most popular houseplant in the world, the Pothos.

Monsteras are more closely related to the Peace Lily.

The difference between the two is the shape and size of the leaves.

The philodendron has smaller leaves, which are split rather than fenestrated.

They also have a feather-like shape, while Monstera leaves are round and heart-shaped.

Monstera is a species of flowering plant native to tropical forests of southern Mexico, south to Panama.

It has been introduced to many tropical areas, and has become a mildly invasive species in Hawaii, Seychelles, Ascension Island and the Society Islands.

Monstera is famous for its beautiful broad green leaves with natural leaf-holes, called fenestrations, which have led to the rise of its nickname, ‘swiss cheese plant’.

As the plant matures, its signature leaves gain their famous holes.

These holes are theorized to maximize sun fleck capture on the forest floor by increasing the spread of the leaf, while decreasing the mass of leaf cells to support.

Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry out between waterings.

Increase frequency with increased light. 

Thrives in bright to medium indirect light.

Not usually suited for direct sun but can be acclimated to withstand it.

Monstera deliciosa plants like standard indoor temperatures (68–86 °F), and prefer high humidity.
