Boxwood, "Man's Oldest Garden Ornamental," was introduced to North America from Europe in the mid-1600s.

It reached its peak popularity in the United States during the early 19th century, and again during the Colonial Revival Era.

The first planting occurred about 1653 at Sylvester Manor on Shelter Island, the NW part of Long Island in New York, using Boxwood brought over via ship from Amsterdam.

Boxwood plants may be used as individual specimens, hedges, parterres and groups.

Special uses include growth in containers, topiary, and bonsai.

Boxwood is considered to be a low-maintenance shrub, but certain practices are recommended to keep the plants healthy.

The fall is the best time for boxwood planting and mulching, while the winter is the ideal time for pruning, thinning, and protection.

Boxwood can also be planted in the spring, which is also the time for monitoring insects.

Deer will typically not eat boxwood, as the plant reportedly contains a toxic alkaloid.

Late fall applications of fertilizer promote root growth.

A few Boxwood descriptions:

American Boxwood

A classic, large-growing upright rounded Boxwood.

In an ideal environment, the plant will continue to grow for 75 to 150 years!

It can develop into a massive shrub (sometimes as large as 15' tall and wide or more).

Green Velvet Boxwood

A vigorous and fast-growing beauty, professional landscapers utilize this specimen frequently for hedges and balls.

A low hedge shrub, featuring medium-sized leaves in an oval shape.

The foliage maintains its green color throughout the year.

Prune and shear tolerant.

Baby Gem Boxwood

This compact boxwood is great for smaller plantings.

As it slowly grows it forms a rounded, dense mound.

An extremely versatile shrub that's ideal for small and formal hedges or topiary.

This Baby G takes pruning exceptionally well.

Baby Gems are primarily valued in the garden for its ornamental globe-shaped form.

It has rich green evergreen foliage which emerges chartreuse in spring.

The small glossy oval leaves remain green throughout the winter.

Little Missy Boxwood

Little Missy is one of the most popular and beautiful boxwoods.

Small leaves, a rounded, dense habit, and glossy, dark green foliage make it unique.

Like other evergreens, the dark green foliage will keep its pleasing coloration throughout winter

During the summer, it'll be visited by its fair share of beneficial pollinators who dig the plant's small yellow flowers.

Green Mountain Boxwood

Green Mountain Boxwood is a woody, broadleaf, evergreen shrub or small tree in the Buxaceae family

Buxus is the Latin name for boxwood or box tree.

Originally from Europe and Asia, boxwoods are one of the oldest known garden plants, dating back to 4000 BC.

It is noted for its dense, upright, pyramidal shape that tends to fill out right to the ground.

It is a slow grower and will mature to 2' to 3' wide and 4' to 5' high.

It grows best in partial shade to full sun.

Morning sun is preferable.

It will tolerate a variety of soil textures as long as they drain well.
