Echeveria is a large genus of succulent plants native to parts of Central America, South America, and Mexico.

It's hard to resist Echeveria, with their jewel-tone leaves and if you're lucky, brilliant flower spikes.

They make interesting additions to container plantings and rock gardens, but these frost-tender succulents must be tended to as houseplants in cold-winter regions.

Succulents in the Echeveria genus are distinguished from other succulents by their plump, smooth leaves that display in a stunning rosette shape.

The most important part of good Echeveria care is watering.

The biggest issue with the succulents is overwatering.

Provide moderate amounts of water in the hot, dry season.

Let the soil dry out completely before watering again.

If your Echeveria leaves are starting to look yellow and transparent, and feel soggy or mushy to the touch, it's likely suffered from overwatering.

An early sign of overwatering is that leaves will start to fall off with just a slight bump.

Echeverias require a substantial amount of light in order to thrive.

They should receive at least four to five hours of bright, direct light every day.

If Echeverias do not receive enough light, they will become elongated and leggy, often reaching towards the closest source of light.

It is also unlikely that they will flower without enough sunlight.

Placing your beautiful Echeveria outdoors during the summer months will help it to thrive.
