Cercis canadensis, also known as the Eastern Redbud, is a large deciduous shrub or small tree, native to eastern North America, from southern Michigan south to central Mexico, west to New Mexico.
They should be planted in moist, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade.
Redbuds are very pH adaptable, and will grow equally well in alkaline or acidic soil.
It's best to plant redbuds in an area with good air circulation to reduce the chance of fungal diseases.
When young, redbuds grow quickly, 4' to 6' per year.
Thereafter they have a medium growth rate of 7' to 10' over 5 to 6 years.
Grows in full sun to partial shade, although the best flowering will be in full sun.
There is a reason your Redbud is known as the Judas tree.
Legend says that, before the crucifixion of Christ, the Redbud was tall and strong, like a white oak.
But, the legend continues, it was the tree on which Judas Iscariot hanged himself when he realized what he has done to cause Jesus' death on a cross.
