Hellebore 'Christmas Rose' 6"

Hellebore 6"

Color: White

Hellebores are so easy and so pretty, they have a place in nearly every landscape.

Their exquisite bowl- or saucer-shape flowers in white (often speckled), pinks, yellows, or maroon remain on the plant for several months, even after the petals have fallen.

Deer-resistant and mostly evergreen, hellebores' divided leaves rise on sturdy stems and may be serrated (like a knife) along the edges.

Grow hellebores in shade where soil remains moist.

Some hellebores prefer acid or alkaline conditions, depending on variety.

They perform best outdoors, but will also grow well indoors if the right conditions exist.

Hellebores require relatively little hands-on care, apart from regular watering and feeding, making them a hassle-free houseplant.

Keep the hellebore in as cool an indoor spot as you can offer.

Bright light is preferable, too.

If the foliage begins to yellow, find a colder spot to keep the hellebore, such as a garage or a sheltered spot outside.

Continue to water sparingly and carefully.

As spring approaches, begin transitioning the hellebore outside, treating it as you would seedlings that you’re hardening off.

Once it is acclimated to staying out day and night and the danger of a freeze has passed, plant the hellebore in your garden.

Choose a spot with part shade and protection from afternoon sun.

In addition to being symbolic of Jesus and Mary, the Christmas Rose represents purity.

For that reason, it has often been carved into confessionals as a five-petal flower.

The penitent walks in a guilty sinner, and out with their purity restored.
