Dieffenbachia is a genus of tropical flowering plants in the family Araceae.

Also known in some areas as Mother-In-Law's Tongue - interesting!

It is native to the New World Tropics from Mexico and the West Indies south to Argentina.

Some species are widely cultivated as ornamental plants, especially as houseplants, and have become naturalized on a few tropical islands.

There are a variety of cultivars available, most with variegated white and green, cream and green, or all-green leaves that can be speckled, splotched, or loosely striped.

Primarily grown for foliage, dieffenbachia rarely flowers, but when it does, the bloom looks a bit like a peace lily.

Several Dieffenbachia species have recently been reassigned with different names, so you may run into confusion on the precise naming of different varieties.

Collectively, they are generally known as Dieffenbachias, or Dumb Canes.

How did the name Dumb Cane originate?

Chewing the plant can cause swelling of the tongue, and difficulty speaking.

Dieffenbachia prefer soil that is consistently and lightly moist, but not soggy.

Water when the top 1”- 2” of the soil is dry, but if the plant is in a lower light condition, it can comfortably dry out a little further.

Dieffenbachia prefers diffused sunlight or partial shade, but will tolerate full shade, which is why it is well-suited as a houseplant.

It thrives in temperatures between 60 and 75°F. 

If leaves appear bleached, with a webby substance on the underside, check and treat the plant for spider mites with Insecticidal Soap Spray or Neem Oil.
