As its name suggests, the river birch naturally grows along riverbanks.
But as a landscape tree, it can be planted almost anywhere in our beautiful country!
The species is valued for its relatively rapid growth, tolerance of wetness and some drought, unique curling bark, spreading limbs, and relative resistance to birch borers.
The River Birch is a fast growing tree, reaching between 40 and 90 feet!
With its graceful weeping branches, it make an excellent ornamental tree, and adapts very well to most conditions.
River Birches like sun to full shade, and the soil can be highly acidic to alkaline.
This beauty should be watered slowly.
This will allow the water to seep into each area that you water, and penetrate deep into the soil around the tree.
A River Birch should not need any fertilizer, unless there is an issue with the soil that needs balancing.
Dead branches should be removed as often as possible to keep the soil clear, as well as to keep the tree and its surroundings looking nice.
If you need to prune the tree, wait until near the end of the growing season.
Late summer or early fall is the best time period for pruning.
